THE WAY

“I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life: no man cometh to the Father, but by Me.” (John 14:6).   

 

Jesus was preparing His disciples for their most difficult test yet: His own crucifixion.  He knew that He would be leaving them and that they would then have to carry the torch of truth and be lights in the world themselves.  Therefore, He told them, “Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in Me.” (John 14:1).

 

Thomas spoke for everyone when he said, “Lord, we know not whither Thou goest; and how can we know the way?”  (John 14:5)   Jesus’ answer is one of the most profound statements that He uttered.  He said, “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life: no man cometh to the Father, but by Me.” (v. 6). 

 

Today, we may struggle at times with knowing the right thing to do, or the right way to go with our lives; but it always comes back to the same simple principle: Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.  We cannot discover God by any other means but Christ.  His is the example that we must follow in every circumstance of life.  It's necessary that we believe that He is not only the Author, but also the Finisher, of our faith.  He has promised us that He will never leave us comfortless but will come to us through His Holy Spirit which He has given to all those who love Him.  What greater guide can we have through life than the Lord of Glory Himself. 

 

In the Old Testament, God led the Israelites through the wilderness of Sinai to the Promised Land.  They did not know where they were going or how to get there.  They only knew that God had a special home prepared for them that was better than anything they could imagine.  To lead them, God employed a pillar of smoke to guide them by day and a pillar of fire to lead them at night.  They received a warning, however, not to move unless the cloud did.  It eventually led them to the new home that God had provided for them.

 

We are on a journey through this life as well.  We don’t know the way to where God is leading us, but we have been given a guide to lead us there step by step.   He is the same guide that the early disciples were given.  Jesus said, “And I will pray the Father, and He shall give you another Comforter, that He may abide with you for ever; even the Spirit of truth; Whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth Him not, neither knoweth Him: but ye know Him; for He dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.” (John 14:16,17).  Jesus also said, “But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, Whom the Father will send in My name, He shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.” (v.26).  It is truly an amazing thought that the God of all creation would send His Son to dwell in us in the form of His Holy Spirit, and that He would then be able to direct our lives as we seek to be led by that same Spirit and feast our souls on the Word of God.

 

I pray that you know Christ in this intimate way, and that you are learning to hear His still, small voice as He seeks to direct your path every day.  If not, then ask, and ye shall receive; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and the door will be opened to you.

 

“Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love Me, he will keep My words: and My Father will love him, and We will come unto him, and make Our abode with him.” (St. John 14:23).

THE BODY OF DEATH

In the seventh chapter of Paul’s letter to the Romans, the Apostle alludes to a practice that the Romans of his time would have been familiar with.   It was a form of capital punishment that was extraordinarily cruel and ghastly.   The early Etruscans had used it and, later, so did certain Roman tyrants.   The practice involved binding the condemned individual to the dead corpse of the one that he/she had murdered.   The magistrate would have the criminal tied face-to-face, hand-to-hand, and body-to-body to their murder victim.   This forced them to live out the rest of their miserable existence in that state, enduring the horrible stench and decay of the dead body.   As the corpse rotted, it would become full of disease which would infect and eventually kill the person that was bound to it.     The Greek poet Virgil in The Aeneid , Book 8,  starting on line 485 describes this form of punishment as practiced by the Etruscan king ...

A HIGHWAY OF HOLINESS
